The SARS outbreak of 2003 was accompanied by a good degree of hysteria and media hype. Those of us who were living in Asia at the time remember it well as the year that the surgical mask became something of a fashion accessory. In the summer of 2004 I travelled down the Mekong river from Laos to Cambodia. This poster adorned a wall of the immigration office on the Cambodian side of the river.
